Chiriaka

July 1954 calendar

ERNEST CHIRIAKA was born in 1910 in Chicago, he started his work of illustrator in New York for theatre posters. He studied in parallel at Grand Central School to improve his technique.
His favourite topic is the Western and several of his works appeared in prestigious magazines. The Esquire magazine ordered some Pin ups which were published in the 1952 calendar. He also worked for the calendars publisher Brown & Bigelow. After several successful years with its Pin up calendars, he retired to devote his time to his passion : painting of western.
ERNEST CHIRIAKA uses the gouache for his pin ups, which contributes to give them a clean style (his colleagues are using the airbrush, the oil paint or pastels). His pin ups are modern, more feminine and we feel that they chose their dress by personal choice more than to loose men's heads. He is a great artist, unfairly unrecognised.
