STUDEBAKER

americanad

The brand Studebaker was founded in 1852 by brothers Studebaker. The company becomes very fast the first world constructor of wagons. It reconverted in the automobile to reach the sixth place of American constructors in the beginning of the 30ies.
Studebaker introduces after the world war two (with Kaiser-Frazer) a really new model which was designed by the team of Raymond Loewy : It's a success, despite the design originality and a conservatory taste of the american clients. Studebaker understood that to fight the big three, it has to propose eccentric models in comparison with GM, Ford and Chrysler.
In 1953, Studebaker proposes an elegant coupé with a European design and a reasonable price. This model will compensate the drop in sales of sedans which are not profitable. In 1954 it is the merger with Packard but the situation of the new group will not be accommodating. In 1959 the brand's first compact model, the Lark will save for some time the brand from the liquidation, it is the first big success of a compact car in the US. Remember from this period, the Avanti, a very modern model but not diffused too much. In 1966 the brand Studebaker is abandoned to leave the place to AMC.
