The brand DeSoto is born in 1928 at the same time
as Plymouth. It carries the name of a Spanish explorer, discoverer of Mississipi
in 1541. Maybe the name with Spanish origins was chosen to easy the exportation
in South and Central America. But one should keep in mind its position in the
Chrysler group between Chrysler and Dodge. Note as well the originality of the
1942 models (proposed during few months), the lights are retractable, actuated
from the dashboard.
The DeSoto cars were always a slightly modified Chryslers by the worry of economy.
Sometimes some elements from Dodge were token. The brand was used to export
the vehicles which were actually rebadged Plymouth, with a decoration and the
front resembling to DeSotos. It's the case of cars which can be found in Europe.
The brand makes expenses of settling the sale in 1958, and it will be continued
until 1961 in the resemblance more and more marked by Chrysler.
