The brand Pontiac is born in 1926, it borrows its
name of a famous Indian chief which opposed to English. His portrait will serve
as mascot until the middle of the 50ies. Another decorative "gimmick"
is the "Silver Streak", a chromed motive which lays between the windscreen
and the radiator grille. The brand slogan is "Dollar for Dollar" to
illustrate an excellent quality/price ratio of Pontiac models. Situated just
a bit higher than Chevrolet, Pontiac proposes very similar models, but with
a higher quality of finishing and a possibility to get a V8 engine.
Pontiac even proposes from 1949 the same model which is slightly retouched,
but people are not gullible, it becomes urgent to change the body. That is made
in 1955 and in addition with a new V8 engine with rocker arms.
After getting out of a tight corner in 1958, Pontiac centres its advertisement
on the "Wide Track" : the distance between wheels is bigger to bring
a better road holding. Pontiac wants to put through that argument : Van Kaufman
and Art Fitzpatrick will be the recognised artists of Pontiac until the beginning
of the 70ies even if all the other brands abandoned a long time ago the drawing
to replace it by photos. Pontiac will be the first brand to have an idea to
install a full size engine in an intermediary body, the Tempest, and will be
in the origin of the first Muscle-car : The GTO
