The year of birth of Oldsmobile makes it the oldest
member of American brands. Situated in the middle of the range of GM, Oldsmobile
often acted as guinea pig to test the novelties by the customers.
In 1949 the new models called "Futuramic" are proposed to the public
: equipped by the "Rocket" V8 engine and the "small" body,
the 88 model will have the best ration weight/power of the moment, and will
be a serious competitor to Hudson in the race of stock car.
Note that the stock car means "a car fabricated in mass production, standard
car" and has no relation with the stock car practised in Europe.
Its positioning "in the middle" made that it didn't leave a particular
impression, the Olds of 50ies are nice as those of Buick or Pontiac And
those of the first half of 60ies are banal, as mostly all the US production.
An original model, The Toronado can be remembered but the front wheeled car
principle with personal-car will be simultaneously used by Cadillac and Buick.
During several years, Oldsmobile will distinguish itself from the other brands
of group, by an original advertising, full of humour, which valorised the famous
4.4.2, the Muscle-car made by Oldsmobile, but it will not last, the Oldsmobile
brand disappears in 2004
