Buick was created in 1903 and incorporated to General
Motors group in 1908. The brand represents for an average American an accessible
dream, contrary to Cadillac, reserved to the elite. Buick even succeeds in 1954
to get to the 3rd position of sales despite its position in the offer in General
Motors group. During the Second World War Buick will be an important supplier
of weaponry made in its factory in Flint. After the war, the model which had
been opened in 1942, was renewed for several years. Buick proposed an automatic
gearbox called "dynaflow", which was the pride of the brand. Its characteristics
was a very supple driving, considered sometimes as too limp! Actually the disadvantage
was not to feel the force of the engine, powerful all the same.
Coming the sixties, the brand meets a disaffection of the publics, tired by
the baroque decoration, the exceeding consummation and a small reliability is
also reproached. This yields to a very important sales decrease. In 1959 the
brand will only get to the 7th place of sales of the U.S.
Buick pulls itself together in the early sixties and it proposes a compact model,
called Super. This car is identical to the Oldsmobile's F85. The brand positioning
is confused once more again, and no more compacts will be proposed, Buick comes
back anyway in the muscle-car race with the GS400 based on the intermediary
Skylark. One model remained in the memories, it's Riviéra, with a front-wheel
drive and an original design, especially after its face-lifting in 1971. The
Buick cars were manufactured in the Flint "Buick-city" but the factory
was relocated in the 90ies to Mexico. I invite you to see the reportage of Michael
Moore on the economical consequences induced to the inhabitants of Flint town
