Swan song


This power race will reach its peak in 1970. After this year several phenomenon gave the Muscle cars the push :
- Insurance rates increase for young drivers
- Security regulation and the limitation of atmospheric pollution
From 1971, the Muscle cars became more discreet in the brochures, the power was announced in net HP, i.e. installed in the cars, sometimes it was not announced at all.
The power started to fall, with a decreased compression and unburned gas recuperation.
Buick and Oldsmobile were the first to free themselves from this range even if for Oldsmobile there was always the possibility to choose the optional 4-4-2 limited to a simple decoration.
The Chrysler group with the Barracuda, Charger and Road runner offered until 1974 the cars worthy of the designation, at least for the appearance. But it was not advisable to Road Runner to drive out in the desert, the coyote would catch it too easily...
Epilogue :
One should not moan over their disappearing, as well as Tyrannosaurus Rex was beautiful, savage and powerful, it has no more its place in our time.
In front of devastating effects of pollution and oil rarefaction, the time comes for energy sparing. Contrary to the Europe, the American government never permitted itself to increase the price of petrol, which would change the consumer attitudes. It preferred to impose to the constructors pollution, consummation and security constraints. This made the American models less attractive for the clients who started to be interested by Japanese cars.
American car industry stuck in the recession which could be fatal and the Muscle cars will participate on the movement because in 1974, for those who were interested in their car performance, it was better to find a second-hand car more than a new car.
